🦆 The Beatles: AI edition

AND: Pixar uses AI to animate new film, Elementals

Hey man,

We now have three ducks running this joint instead of one.

Crazy.

Here’s the AI rundown for today:

  • Meet the new ‘The Daily Quack’ team 🦆 🫂

  • Pixar uses AI to animate ‘Elementals’ and it’s pretty fricken cool 🔥 📹️

  • Paul McCartney revives The Beatles using AI 🎙️ 🤖

  • Wimbledon ousts human commentators in favour of AI 🎾 🙅

The ducks behind the AI magic 💙

We’re happy to introduce two new writers to the team!

Meet Maily: Maily is currently a Bachelor of Computer Science student at Monash University. She loves to connect with other students and expand her knowledge within a range of concepts in AI.

One of which is through writing The Daily Quack! 📝

Meet Donald: The original writer behind The Daily Quack, Donald is passionate in educating individuals from any tech background in becoming comfortable with AI and how to use it safely.

He currently studies a Bachelor of Science/ Masters of Engineering at The University of Melbourne. 🔧

Meet Kaitlyn: Kaitlyn is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce at The University at Melbourne.

Via global networking, she aims to empower the generation of ideas and promote the rise of accessible AI use. The Daily Quack is going global! 🌏️

We hope to provide new and innovative segments to The Daily Quack soon! Keep your eyes peeled 👀

Paul McCartney has been cookin’ 👨‍🍳

We’ve only been waiting since 1969…

A new Beatles song is coming out, thanks to AI: Sir Paul McCartney has just announced that he’s using AI to release a new Beatles song later this year.

He announced that they were able to use AI to isolate John Lennon’s voice and piano playing from a recording made 45 years ago. 🎹

However, this has been gathering divided opinions on whether this is taking things too far. ❗️

While other modern artists such as Drake and The Weekend have shown their distaste towards AI tracks emulating their voices, it’s intriguing to see the 20th century star use AI. 🤔

What do you think? Should we let the past be the past or is this benefitting all our nostalgia?

Pixar 🤝 AI

So where’s the first AI generated cartoon duck? We’re waiting.

Looks pretty fire bro. The new Pixar film - Elementals - has caused animators to run into a little problem.

Turns out that when the main character, Ember, is made of fire, it makes it a little impossible to balance the character shape and movements.

And it comes out looking kinda scary. 😨

But fortunately for Pixar, it seems like AI can do anything we can’t!

By using a type of artificial intelligence called Neural Style Transfer (NST) that can move voxels, which are basically 3D pixels with volume. AI has mastered the look of Pixar’s fiery main character.

I guess we have AI to thank for a whole new movie from Pixar. ✅

Quack! 🦆

AI reporters, now, AI commentators 🎾

Beep boop. 30 love.

The AI commentators are powered by IBM for the online broadcast of Wimbledon.

Do Gen-Z even know what IBM is? Well I guess they do now. 🧠

Tech corporation, IBM, have created an AI generated commentator that will service the entirety of the 2023 Wimbledon online broadcast. 🤖

“The commentary is being generated from the stats, forehand, backhand, etc.

“We had tennis specialists on the team, so we drew on them in terms of the language it will use. It’s not based on an individual and their style.”

“You can see in the future that you could train it in different styles, languages, voices. So this is a step on that journey.”

“You can’t replace John McEnroe doing commentary, that human element always needs to be there. It’s very much about supplementing and complementing.”

Kevin Farrar, Head of IBM’s Sports Partnerships

While AI won’t be able to provide that authentic human touch, the accuracy and speed of delivering important game data to an audience of millions has just become easier. 👍️

We think the best balance in sports commentary and in many jobs, is formed when AI supports humans in their jobs. 🤝

Accuracy of AI with the enthusiasm of humans.

Duck, duck… Goose!

Our new segment returns for day 2.

Today’s question:

What do you call an artificially intelligent Oreo? 🍪
